There are many ways to spend less and save more. Surprisingly, many people discover how much they actually save when they take a frugal approach to spending. One of the best ways that's not often thought of is going to a flea market, thrift store, or garage sale.
Some of Jeju’s flea markets are open on a monthly basis while others operate weekly or daily. Goods are usually inexpensive such as handicrafts, pottery, home décor items, apparel, shoes, hand-bags, purses, and many others.
In the case of the Art Flea Market in Jeju, shoppers and vendors range from students, handicraft artisans, wood craftsmen, fashion enthusiasts, food vendors, tourists and Jeju citizens young and old.
The organizer, Kang Yoon Hee, first thought of the idea for an art flea market in Jeju while traveling overseas. The first market was held in April of this year in front of the Venture Maru building near City Hall.
The purpose of the Art Flea Market is to help new artists showcase their talents and skills and give them the opportunity to launch their products. For the fourth Art Flea Market, which was held on the evening of Aug. 7, about 30 stalls were set up around the front of the Venture Maru.
Participants can bring tables to display their wares or just set them out on blankets.
Some of the vendors are experienced business people, so they advertise their products and entice customers with 15 to 20 percent discounts on some items. Other vendors are just starting out. During market day they share their dreams with the other artists and work to establish a competitive business for their futures.
Kang encourages camaraderie among Jeju citizens, immigrants and visitors through the market, especially now that the number of foreigners on the island is increasing. She welcomes new artists or other business-minded people and may consider changing to a weekly event if there is a positive reaction to the Art Flea Market.
The market is open on the first Saturday of each month and held in the evening during the summer. The next market, No. 5, will be held on Sept. 4, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
