¡ã Visitors at Hanmaum Seon Center lit by glowing lanterns. Photo by Yang Ho Geun |
Buddha turned 2,545 years old on May 21. To celebrate, lanterns glowing with caricatures of the rotund god, as well as lotus flowers and animals lit up temples throughout Jeju and mainland Korea. The highlight of festivities on Jeju was an exhibition of lanterns at Hanmaum Seon Center in Yongpyong, Jeju City. By tradition, lanterns represent long life, health and good harvest. Hanmaum Seon Center was designated by Korea’s Jogye Order of Korean Bud-dhism as a sacred meditation center and is devoted to Seon Buddhism (also known as Zen Buddhism). Buddha’s Birthday is a national holiday in Korea.
