Governor Woo Keun Min is going along with the central government’s recommendation to build a naval base in Gangjeong, Seogwipo. On Nov. 15 Woo, who was originally against the February 2007 plan which was approved by former Governor Kim Tae Hwan, said he made the decision after considering “opinions of the parties concerned” and would make an effort to explain to Jeju citizens the changes to his office’s policies.
He told the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council that the Ministry of Public Administration and Security would provide “active support” based on feedback from the provincial government, council and residents.
As a result of this change in policy, citizens of Gangjeong and those who oppose the construction of the naval base will be consulted and their participation encouraged, officials said after the announcement.
